Mark Sand & Gravel Co. is a highway paving contractor based in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. The company performs most of its work in west central Minnesota and eastern North Dakota. Although the company’s focus is highway construction, the backbone of the organization has always been aggregate production; that is, the mining and processing of rock products from its many gravel pits, both owned and leased, throughout the same geographical area.
In addition to its portable paving operations, Mark Sand & Gravel Co. also operates several permanent or fixed aggregate facilities including a wash plant in Underwood, Minnesota, a wash plant in Hankinson, North Dakota and a rail shipping operation in Lisbon, North Dakota. |
Our facilities are staffed with individuals trained and certified for testing within the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. We maintain annual certifications for MN and ND in our laboratory facilities.

John Mark started this company with a shovel and a wheelbarrow.Mark Sand & Gravel Co. was founded in 1948 by John Mark. John started the company with a single axle dump truck and a hand shovel in Underwood, Minnesota. This site remains the current location of the Underwood wash plant.
Soon after the company was established, John Mark began screening gravel, followed by crushing and washing gravel, and eventually expanded the company into gravel based road work. By the late 1950’s the company was performing cold mix paving work which finally evolved into hot mix asphalt paving in the 1960’s. Upon John Mark’s death in 1973, the company was left to six key employees. The last of these original six employees to hold ownership was Don Ashworth, who sold the company to Mark Thorson in 1997. Since 1997 the company has expanded its operations into Eastern North Dakota, added ready-mix plants, more asphalt plants and rail shipping. The company usually operates seasonally with 80 to 120 employees, but has employed as many as 200 employees during some years. Although the company has expanded and progressively grown in several areas and disciplines, it has also exited some markets in recent years - anticipating and adapting to highway funding in particular and the economy in general. |
